|Importance of Garbage Disposals|
|Disposers and their Importance Indispensable in the modern kitchen, a garbage disposal helps make food preparationand cleanup easy and fast. Attached to the underside of a kitchen sink's drain, a garbage disposal works by chewing up food scraps fed down the drain with a heavy flow of water. A shredder breaks the food down in the grinding chamber, and then an impeller arm and plate force the liquid and particles down the drain. Dishwasher drain water also runs through the garbage disposal so that any large particles are chewed up and drained away.
Two types of garbage disposal are commonly available: the familiar continuous-feed style, activated by a switch as you run the water, and the batch-feed type, activated by turning a stopper after loading the disposal with garbage. Most garbage disposals have electric-powered motors, but one new type operates solely on the force of water from the sink spout. These are particularly practical where there is no electrical outlet for a disposal beneath the sink

|How Garbage Disposal Works?|
|A garbage disposal works the same way except for the fact that it cannot digest any food. Whatever it chews, it disposes them off. A garbage disposal chews and grinds up food scraps and waste that are fed down the drain with a heavy flow of water. The disposal is mounted on the underside of the sink drain. It has an electric motor connected to a power supply. The disposer has a grinding chamber with shredding blades that break down the food. This finely grinded waste is then passed on to an impeller arm and plate that force the waste particles and liquid down the drain. Most garbage disposals have electric-powered motors and run on power except one made by HydroMaid that doesn't need any power and operates on the force of water from the sink spout|
|A garbage disposal uses a small motor to rotate a turntable upon which waste is gathered. The centrifugal force thus created forces waste into the serrated wall of the holding chamber and shreds it into small pieces safe for plumbing. Lugs are small mashing pieces within the disposal that help to force all the waste against and eventually through the wall. A constant stream of water from the faucet makes sure all the mechanisms stay clean, helps to maintain smooth operation, and pushes food into the shredding area.
Most garbage disposals in the home are of one certain variety: a continuous feed model. This is the one most people are familiar with and allows for garbage to be added while the machine is running without any problems. Because the disposal is spinning so rapidly, people may wonder why the occasional piece of waste doesn't just come flying back out of the drain. A rubber ring fixed to the top of the machine prevents that from happening. The other model of garbage disposal is referred to as a batch feed. In order to use this disposal, waste must be pre-loaded into the chamber and a stopper placed on top before it can be started.
|Main Garbage Disposal Problems|
|Like other appliances in you home garbage disposals run on electric and is composed of movement parts. The inner components of garbage disposals are composed of bearings, motor and other components. The chances of wear and tear are more likely then other appliances in your home as the speed of moving components in a disposal is much more then any other appliance in your home. Beside movements of parts it is treated with water, oil and food waste all time so don't be panic if it breaks down. Following are some of the reasons that garbage disposals stop working.
a) It Can Get Jammed
A simple and very easy solution is to through the solid food waste in garbage instead of disposal and other solid materials as garbage disposals are meant to dispose food waste not plastic, coffee beans, soda can tabs etc.
b) It MakesHumming Noise
A simple and very easy solution is to remove garbage disposal and clean the clog or any thing that got stuck between the impeller and the shredder ring. To avoid damaging the motor, turn the disposer off right away. Then clear the jam as described above. If the unit hums when you turn it on, but it's not jammed, the motor is probably bad. When you have a bad motor, it's time to replace the whole disposer.
|c) It Can Leak
The garbage disposals can leak by the passage of time and usage. The water leaks from the top or bottom seals. If the leak is coming from the drainpipe at the disposer, try removing the drainpipe and replacing the rubber gasket. But if the leak is coming from the top seal of the disposer near the sink, or from inside the disposer, you need to replace the whole garbage disposer.
d) It's is on, but nothing is happening
Once the flywheel gets jammed the fuse or circuit breaker in your electrical service panel will trip and turn off very quickly. The flywheel is stuck because something is lodged between it or the impeller(s) and the shredder ring. If, when you turn on the switch, the disposer is jammed, you may hear the motor hum. After you reset the circuit barker and the fuse the disposer should work. If the power is on and you don't hear any noise or any movement in the disposer then its motor overload may had gotten to hot and in most cases may had burnt. At this point the only solution is to replace the disposer.
e) It's grinding or disposing poorly
The proper and smooth flowing drains play very important roll in the proper functioning garbage disposal. The disposal functions in a way that when the food waste is dumped in disposal the flow of water and the spin of the impeller at 2800 rpm makes a heavy rotational force that pushes the crushed waste in drain.
